Statement Pieces: Decorative Pillows

Decorating and making a statement in any room’s décor is one of the easiest ways to refresh a space by working in new patterns, textures, and colors. Decorating with throw pillows may seem like a small part of how to create stunning design in a space, but that couldn't be further from the truth. When it comes to seating in whatever room, accessorizing with a pillow can pack a ton of punch and is one of the easiest ways to inject style and bring out the subtle design features of the space.

Use Color To Your Advantage
Just like planning and outlining for many things, consider building a storyboard to follow when choosing the colors to use for pillows as statement pieces. This color storyboard can feature not only the pillows selected, but can pull from other sources in the room, such as the wall color, the rug or the curtains. And, when using a variety of pillows combining different patterns or shapes, the look you create can be cohesive if they share the same colors.

Choose Patterns and Prints

You can also mix and match different patterns, as long as the patterns blend with or use the colors in your color storyboard. You can have a lead pattern that utilizes a majority of the colors and is the most prominent in size. Secondary patterns can contain one or a few of the colors and are less prominent, but still blend into the overall look. When using multiple pattern styles, you should using different scales of patterns, allowing one to dominate so that the patterns don’t compete with one another.
The use of patterns is where you can make a statement by mixing and matching large patterns with medium prints and even a subtle pattern in a solid color. You can create a cohesive look that brings the color and pattern into the rest of the space by highlighting and not outshining. Also, mixing and matching styles and prints into statement pieces elevate the interest in the entire space and keep the eye engaged.

Try Different Shapes and Sizes

You can also create an eye-catching statement piece look when using pillows of different shapes and sizes. When selecting these pillows, size is a big consideration. A pillow too large will overwhelm the space. Pick a throw pillow that’s too small and it will look like an afterthought rather than the statement piece you are trying to accomplish.

Experiment With Texture

There are so many options when it comes to using texture to create a statement piece. A fur-based pillow can stand on its own on top of seating. The texture is an important element in every room, and the texture of a statement piece pillow and how it works with the rest of the upholstery should always be considered. The look and feel of texture offers a fun way to achieve a unique aesthetic outside of a pillow’s color or shape. Ideally, you want to create depth by combining different textures; a soft-looking pillow can be layered on a harder surface, or a pillow that glistens can be positioned on something matte.

Statement piece pillows are an easy, inexpensive way to transform the whole look of a room. You can get creative and mix it up; and you can change the look of a room with each season or as you desire. When choosing the right size, shape, and mix of patterns and textures, for your statement piece and all other pillows used, it’s almost impossible to go wrong.
